Adding Kanban to your project
Although the concept of Kanban has been around for years, it's use for agile software development teams is relatively new compared to Scrum. Also known as Lean Development, the application of proven best practises from the manufacturing industry can have a positive impact on the flow of your development.
Optimise your team's process
Similar to Scrum, Kanban uses a visual board with cards to represent activity within your process. However, instead of focusing on work to be completed in time-based iterations, Kanban is more concerned with optimising the throughput of your workflow by exposing bottlenecks.
Turn the GreenHopper task board into a Kanban board by breaking down the discrete "in process" tasks of the team and mapping them to your JIRA workflow. Then set minimum and maximum constraints to each column limiting the amount of work to be done at any given time. A violation of column limits at any stage indicates a bottleneck in the current or preceding step of the process, and the team should focus on something else to reduce wasted effort.
Over time, teams fine tune the constraints on each column to optimise the flow of their process.
